The effect of crop insurance in Ecuadorian rice farming: a technical efficiency approach, with A. Reyes, A. Villegas, M. Castro. (2023; forthcoming in Agricultural Finance Review)
About: The aim of this research is to estimate the technical efficiency of the massive and economically important crop of rice in Ecuador, and then conduct a comparison between groups of farmers with and without insurance.
Export Diversification Dynamics in Latin America, with Manuel Agosin, in Handbook on Trade and Development. Edited by Morrissey, O., López, R. A., and Sharma, K. Elgar Publishing. (2015)
About: In this chapter, we construct a set of export diversification measures in order to give a detailed view of export diversification dynamics in Latin America.
Modeling Crime Underreporting in Bogotá: A Spatial Autoregressive Crime Panel Model with Fixed Effects, with
Subal Kumbhakar, and Luis Sandoval. (2023; submitted)
About: We study whether living near neighborhoods with high crime rates may affect crime reporting. Specifically, we propose a spatial autoregressive stochastic frontier model with fixed effects and use a rich database of police-reported crimes from 2010 to 2018 to examine the importance of spatial spillovers in violent crime underreporting in Bogotá.
The Effects of Hiring Discrimination over the Business Cycle, with Florian Kuhn. (2021)
About: We explore whether hiring discrimination implies a higher volatility of labor market outcomes for discriminated groups in the context of a standard search-and-matching model with an urn-ball matching function..
Business Cycles, Worker Flows, and Hiring Discrimination (2020)
About: In this paper I extend the search-and-matching model used in the paper with F. Kuhn to allow endogenous separations. I study whether differences in productivity may affect our overall results regarding the effects of hiring discrimination over the Business Cycle.
Energy prices, firms’ productivity and market power by industry. Evidence from a developing country, (2020)
About: In this paper I study whether energy prices affects Chilean manufacturing firms’ productivity and markups by industry.
Spillovers, efficiency, and human capital in rice farming production in Ecuador: a semiparametric smooth coefficient spatial autoregressive approach
About: The relevance of the connection between human capital and spillovers raises important questions, like to what extent a farmer’s output and efficiency can be associated with its neighboring farmers’ actions. In this paper, we research efficiency spillovers among Ecuadorian rice farmers and study whether human capital affects spillovers. We combine a novel semiparametric smooth coefficient spatial autoregressive stochastic frontier model with a rich microeconomic dataset obtained from a nationally representative survey of an important crop production in a developing country, rice in Ecuador.
A Violent Crime Index with a Non-Zero Probability of Underreporting
About: We propose an approach to aggregate different violent crime variables into one crime index. We implement the proposed index to a detailed database of police-reported crimes in Bogota, Colombia, over 2010-2018.
